Guinea Pig Care Guide

Guinea pigs are gentle, social animals that need daily care, companionship, and a safe, enriching home. With the right diet, housing, and veterinary attention, they can thrive as beloved family pets.

Housing and Environment

  • Provide the largest enclosure possible. A pair of guinea pigs should have plenty of room to walk, explore, and exercise.
  • Use a solid floor with soft, absorbent bedding such as paper-based bedding or fleece liners. Avoid wire flooring, cedar, and strongly scented wood shavings.
  • Keep the enclosure in a quiet, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, drafts, smoke, and extreme temperatures.
  • Offer hiding places, tunnels, and safe toys to encourage natural behaviors and reduce stress.
  • Clean soiled areas daily and thoroughly clean the enclosure at least once a week.

Companionship

Guinea pigs are highly social and usually do best with a compatible guinea pig companion. Introduce animals gradually and supervise their first interactions. Never house guinea pigs with rabbits, as they have different dietary and health needs and rabbits may injure them.

Healthy Diet

  • Hay: Provide unlimited grass hay, such as timothy or orchard grass, every day. Hay should make up most of the diet and supports healthy teeth and digestion.
  • Pellets: Offer a small daily portion of plain, fortified guinea pig pellets. Choose pellets made with vitamin C and avoid mixes containing seeds, nuts, dried fruit, or colored pieces.
  • Vegetables: Give a variety of fresh, leafy vegetables each day. Bell peppers are an excellent source of vitamin C.
  • Fruit: Offer small amounts only as an occasional treat because fruit is high in sugar.
  • Water: Provide fresh, clean water at all times in a bottle or heavy, stable bowl.

Guinea pigs cannot make their own vitamin C, so they need a reliable dietary source. Do not add vitamin drops to water unless directed by a veterinarian, because the vitamin may break down quickly and affect the taste of the water.

Handling and Exercise

Approach your guinea pig calmly and allow them time to become familiar with your voice and scent. Support the chest and hindquarters with both hands, keeping them close to your body. Avoid picking them up by the legs, scruff, or stomach.

Provide daily supervised exercise in a secure area free from electrical cords, toxic plants, small openings, and other pets. Guinea pigs should never exercise outdoors without close supervision and protection from predators.

Grooming

  • Brush long-haired guinea pigs daily and short-haired guinea pigs regularly to prevent mats.
  • Trim nails carefully when they become overgrown. Ask a veterinary professional to demonstrate if needed.
  • Check the skin, ears, eyes, teeth, and feet regularly for changes.
  • Only bathe your guinea pig when necessary and use a small-animal shampoo recommended by a veterinarian.

Veterinary Care

Schedule regular checkups with a veterinarian experienced in treating guinea pigs. Seek veterinary care promptly if your guinea pig stops eating, produces fewer droppings, has difficulty breathing, develops diarrhea, loses weight, appears unusually quiet, or shows signs of pain. Guinea pigs can become seriously ill quickly, and a loss of appetite is an emergency.

Daily Care Checklist

  • Refresh food and water.
  • Provide unlimited hay.
  • Offer fresh vegetables.
  • Remove soiled bedding and leftover fresh food.
  • Check appetite, activity, droppings, and appearance.
